Gimmiione (my name is Summer
Rain), also known as Sheila
Karasiewicz. My First Nation Community is Fort William First Nation,
which is located next to Thunder Bay, Ontario. I am from the Turtle Clan and I
am a Fancy Shawl Dancer in the pow wow circle. I am also a member of the
Animikii Wajiw Madwe’ikwewag (Thunder Mountain Woman Drum
Group).
I am the 2nd Vice President for Local 0296 of the Union of
National Employees (UNE). At the last
PSAC Ontario Regional Convention, I was elected as the Aboriginal Members
representative for Ontario Region. As the Aboriginal representative, I am also a
member of the PSAC National Human Rights committee representing our Aboriginal
members.
As your Aboriginal representative, I will be your voice bringing your
concerns and/or challenges to council so that we can help ensure that your
concerns and/or issues are heard and addressed. With your help and mine, the PSAC can help
insure your that workplace is more inclusive and also help improve your quality
of life. I would like to assist in any way possible to allow your inclusion and
participation in any PSAC events and/or training.
The PSAC has fought for Aboriginal rights for many years, which brought
about employment equity in the federal public sector in the 1980's and 1990's to
ensure fair and equitable treatment for our members. The
struggle for a society and for workplaces that recognize and encourage full
participation of all people is far from over.
Confronting discrimination and harassment at work, protecting benefits
such as sick leave and disability insurance, and continuing to advance
employment equity are some of the key issues.
